Snoop Dogg’s net worth revealed after 2018 BET Awards performance
Snoop Dogg shut down the show at the 2018 BET Awards.
The legendary musician hit the stage to perform four of his biggest hits. He kicked off the performance with Who Am I? (What’s My Name), moving on to The Next Episode, Sunrise, and You.
During the final song of his performance, Snoop swapped his regular clothes for a priest’s robe, standing behind a pulpit.
Snoop Dogg’s performance was one of many during the BET Awards, but was perhaps that most memorable of the evening.
Who is Snoop Dogg?
Calvin Cordoze Broadus Jr, known professionally as Snoop Dogg, was born October 20, 1971, in Long Beach, California. His interest in music began at a young age, singing at his local church before geting into rapping in middle schoo.
In his teen years he linked up with cousins Nate Dogg and Lil 1/2 Dead as well as their friend Warren G to record music. They called themselves 213, named for the Long Beach, California area code.
Dr Dre heard one of Snoop Dogg’s early freestyles and got in touch with him. DOC, a former NWA affiliate, helped the up-and-coming rapper with the technical aspects of writing music.
They remain close to this day. DOC told Noisey: ‘Snoop Dogg has always held me up. He’s always held me above the fray, and that keeps me relevant. Wherever he goes, he takes my name with him when he does interviews.
‘He’s talking about me. He keeps me alive, and that feeds my spirit.’
Snoop Dogg’s first project with Dr Dre was a theme song for the 1992 movie Deep Cover. They then got to work on Dr Dre’s album, The Chronic, and in time Snoop Dogg’s album Doggystyle.
Snoop Dogg released a short film called Murder Was the Case about a murder trial he was at the center of in 1994. The trial was related to the shooting death of a gang member, according to the LA Times.
The film featured a carefully curated soundtrack. Snoop Dogg was acquitted in 1996.
After the trial was over, the rapper, the mother of his first son and their kennel of dogs moved to Claremont, California where he lived until 2000.
In 1998, Snoop Dogg signed with Master P’s No Limit Records, releasing four albums before signing with Geffen Records in 2004. Drop It Like It’s Hot, the first single off his album, R&G: The Masterpiece, was his first single to reach No. 1 in the charts.
Three years later he became the first artist to release a track as a ringtone prior to its single release.
Snoop Dogg released his ninth and tenth albums, Ego Trippin’ and Malice N Wonderland, in 2008 and 2009 respectively. He continued working with other artists during this time, appearing on songs like California Gurls by Katy Perry, Jessica Mauboy’s Get ’em Girls and even a song called Turtleneck & Chain by The Lonely Island.
In 2012, Snoop Dogg famously ventured into reggae, releasing a song called La La LA under the name Snoop Lion. He claimed, at the time, that he’d been rechristened Snoop Lion by a Rastafarian priest in Jamaica.
The same year he gave electronic music a try, releasing songs under the name DJ Snoopadelic.
He released several more albums of varying genres before his most recent project, a gospel album called Bible of Love, which came out on March 16, 2018. Snoop Dogg then made an appearance on Gorillaz’s latest album, The Now Now.
Music isn’t all Snoop Dogg is known for. He’s transitioned into the world of presenting, hosting shows like Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party with Martha Stewart and The Joker’s Wild.
As for his personal life, Snoop Dogg married Shante Taylor, his high school sweetheart, in June 1997. He filed for divorce from her in 2004, but the pair renewed their vows in 2008.
They share three children: Corde, Cordell and Cori. Snoop Dogg has one other son, a boy called Julian Corrie Broadus, from a previous relationship.
