We all want gorgeous glowing skin. This not only makes us feel as though we can face the world with confidence, it also means that we require little to no makeup to look our best. But some of our lifestyle habits could be standing between us and the skin of our dreams. Here are five things to stop doing, according to dermatologists, if you want your best complexion ever.

1. Talking on the phone

While we are not suggesting that you leave all calls unanswered, putting your phone up against your face can lead to breakouts and irritation. This is because our phones are covered in germs and facial oils from frequent use. To prevent flare-ups, it’s advised that you either put your mobile on speakerphone when answering calls or that you carry antibacterial wipes to clean your handset after each use.

2. Using harsh facial scrubs

Many of us have been led to believe that exfoliating using a facial scrub is the best way to ensure clean skin and unclogged pores. The truth is that scrubs can be incredibly harsh and even cause micro-tears in the skin, which can cause it to show signs of ageing more quickly. Instead, try using an at-home peeling solution or products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids, which encourage skin turnover.

3. Sleeping with makeup on

This should go without saying, because it’s been said so many times before, but it’s vital that you remove your makeup before hitting the hay if you want to have a healthy, glowing complexion. If you don’t, the free radicals that have accumulated on your face throughout the day will cause damage to your skin as you sleep, and cause fine lines and wrinkles to develop. Using makeup remover and cleaning your face before bedtime is a must!

4. Picking your skin

It can be extremely tempting to go in with your fingers when you see a pimple or blackhead on your skin, but if you want clear, radiant skin, you should definitely resist the urge to do so. Picking can lead to scarring and discolouration, which is a worse end result than if you had just left it alone. Rather use spot products that contain salicylic acid or tea-tree oil to reduce inflammation and keep the area free from bacteria.

5. Sleeping on dirty linen

We might not think of our bedding as being a hot bed for germs and bacteria, but unfortunately it is. During the night we shed skin and sweat, and this all ends up on our sheets and pillowcases. Dermatologists suggest changing your pillowcase at least once a week, if not more, to prevent your linen from causing breakouts, and investing in a silk or satin one to prevent your face from creasing during the night and causing wrinkles.
